by AnneCharyl.Project | May 17, 2020 | Becoming a Freelancer

I have been in the corporate world for more than 10 years. The First 5 years were full of excitement and drive. I was always curious and eager to learn as many things as I can. I never looked at how big is the paycheck for as long as there is a challenge. Working an 8 am – 6 pm job has become a means to pay the bills, put foods in the table, and provide the family needs. Not that it’s bad, but as I climbed the ladder in the corporate world I forgot to relax and enjoy every moment. For 10 years I have been focused on my job, while spending very little time with my family. I have a daughter and get married at 23, so you can only imagine.

Realizing the missed opportunities and time for my family is when freelancing first crosses my mind.

Part 1 - The Purpose

Last 2018, a family friend sought my help with marketing a family business. Since it is in a different industry and because of my natural inclination for new things, I accepted it. It was a simple marketing task so I was able to do it alongside my regular job. During one of our meetings she mentioned that there are several small businesses that are looking for marketing support. Living in a small city with little to none marketing agencies and being friends with local creatives I was once again tempted to consider freelancing. Being a freelancer will give me an opportunity to work with other industries, help small businesses, and have more time with my family.

Part 2 – The Passion

Growing up, I have always been curious about a lot of things but very shy and would always work in the background. Most of the time I am not confident with myself and the things that I can do. I always have a passion for learning and being good at whatever skills I learned. I am not contented with knowing something, I want to master it. I don’t usually engage in something that I am not confident about. As a freelancer you will be working on your own so being resourceful is very important.

Part 3 – The Skills

Before I graduated High school, I already know what tract I am going to take for my career. Even at a young age I have discovered my love for business. Thus, even if my parents want me to take up Nursing, I pursue BSBA Major in Marketing Management. Currently, I have more than 10 years of experience in Marketing. Aside from my Marketing experience I also do Project Management, Business Development, and Operations Management.

Part 4 – The Things to Learn

As an employee for the past 10 years, I have been used to the regular job set up. As I start my “full time” freelancing career I know that there are still a lot of things to learn. Aside from my Marketing Consultancy clients I would also like to venture into Online Jobs as a Virtual Assistant. As I have mentioned in Part 2, I don’t usually engage in something that I am not confident about. Not because of the client or the business but more on about my skills or what I can give. It is important to me that I am equipped or at least know something about what is expected from me and continuously improved in order to give my client the best output. With this, I have enrolled in some online courses where I can learn new skills and be able to apply it in my freelancing career.

Here are some of the courses I enrolled at Filipino Virtual Assistance Academy:
